At first I really really really don’t want to write about the issue no matter how intense my ~feelings are about it. You know, it’s classy to only speak good things about the departed and so on & so forth. Actually, I did tweet about this issue in 7 or so concise posts and I thought that was it; that I had finally let everything out. As it turned out, THE UNIVERSE threw me a curveball tonight that made my bloggin’ juices a-flowing and when the universe called; you just can’t dodge it away.

So today; stuff was pretty light at the office (calm before the storm) so I was able to get out on 7-ish (instead of 8.30). I normally don’t want to drive home at that hour because the traffic is still pretty crazy and I like driving on an empty road (usually starts on 8.30-ish).

TONIGHT THO, IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL CRAY, THIS HAPPENS.
Basically the road that they blocked is narrow (2-lines only), very heavily commuted, LOTS of U-turns and on top of that it is also a Transjakarta route. It stretches from East to the Northernmost tip of Jakarta and is the main access for big vehicles & truck to reach the harbor. Got the idea of how important this street is?

SO MUCH FEELINGS AFTER THE CUT! SAVE YOURSELVES NOW! LAST CHANCE!

So imagine my WRATH when I read about what the kids from this VERY REPUTABLE AND SERIOUS UNIVERSITY *sneeze* did on 6 PM in the middle of that road today. Cliff note: they blocked the road as a tribute to Dead Guy. Apparently this was supposed to be a ~~~peaceful tribute to him, who has done blablablablabla (I really dunno what he did btw except setting himself on fire and killing himself in the process) for this country.

Their dumbass ~~~~~~~tribute caused a MASSIVE traffic jam; not just to the stretch of the road that they occupied; but basically to THE WHOLE STRETCH OF THE ROUTE. I read about the dumbassery in Twitter so I entered the highway and exited in Pulomas (thinking that I’ve passed the foolery) only to have my car STUCK after just 500 metres because the jam had snaked on. %$%^$&!@#%$!

The extra 30 minutes I spent NOT MOVING in my car made me think about the medium-sized picture (I’m not eloquent enough to analyze the ~big picture; I don’t have a Master’s degree :p). Surely there must be some good things that could came out of Indo student’s movement in the streets? They were a huge part of the 1998 movement who toppled the Indonesian dictatorship (*sneeze* or so they told us) by basically doing the exact same thing. Most of Indonesians were supportive of those bunch of young kids who had the balls to say things that all others were afraid to say; and who dared to desecrate the so-called symbol of oppression by ransacking the MPR Building & all. At the time, they looked so badass instead of dumbass.

So what’s changed?

What’s the difference between the youth of 1998 with the dumbasses that I & THOUSANDS of commuters cursed (my curse: is for any of them to NEVER get a decent job) tonight? In my medium-sized picture analysis: PLENTY.

Let’s get number one out of the way: Giving a tribute that consists of blocking a major road, vandalizing a bus shelter, and polluting the air by burning rubber tires in the MIDDLE of said road for a dude who (I think) miscalculated his stunt queen act by burning himself is pretty telling of how their thought process works. LIKE seriously. The acts speak for themselves. It is in no way a representative of how 99% of Indonesians think and feel and to have those kids co-opt the words “WE DID THIS FOR THE INDONESIAN PEOPLE!!!!” is pretty insulting to everyone’s intelligence.

Number two: Back then in 1998; there was legit feeling of fear when a person say or do anything that represented the true feelings of every one. I think back then you could be ~~missing if you were caught saying so much as “TVRI IS BORING Y’ALL!” The people who spoke up back then truly had something to lose and they still spoke no matter what. I think that’s probably why I still have a soft spot for Amien Rais and Gus Dur (RIP) no matter how cray they were later on. (Fat Lady however; has depleted my goodwill) THEY were badass; and the original students who dared to support them were brave souls. On the contrary; nowadays there’s this legit feeling of GROOOOAAAAANNN when Indonesians heard about a student’s rally going on somewhere. Mostly because we all know that it is a). pointless; b). usually a stunt-queen act; c). they’re mostly “pesenan orang” *wink*; d). causing more harm (TRAFFIC JAM FROM HELL) than any good.

Number three; seriously: do they think that shouting unintelligible groan-inducing oration through their speakerphone is more effective than a well-written Twitter account? I seem to remember a few Twitter accounts who were able to achieve the “politically-desired reactions” from the public regarding some hot public issues. They’re amazing btw; Indonesian politics smut is usually dirtier than a warm diaper and SMUT ALWAYS WORKS. ALWAYS.  It requires no tires to be burned (and therefore cost-efficient and eco-friendly); no spray paint to be wasted; and no risk for throat infection from screaming shit to the megaphone.

That brings me to ask the universe; why do they still do this? Couldn’t they read and write? Couldn’t they set up a Twitter account? Do they know how to put up coherent sentences? COULD THEY NOT ANNOY PEOPLE AND STILL GET THEIR POINTS ACROSS?

Like seriously. This is almost 2012. Grow up. At least use your ears to hear what people to say about your pathetic acts.
And stop labeling The Dude Who Burned Himself To Make A Point as a “hero.” GURL PLEASE. SIT THE FUCK DOWN.

This woman is responsible to develop a thinking platform for those kids to build on as they grow older. 1. Women who use perfume = SLUTS WITH NO MORAL

Actually she has three pages worth of indexed blogs that I’m too tired to read in one day. Hey, I have my daily crazy quota and honestly reading her blogs made me wanna take a long shower to cleanse myself off the stank. I am obviously not the authority in religious teachings let alone Islam, but even with my very limited understanding I know that THIS IS NOT A LEGIT ISLAMIC TEACHING. From what I gather from more knowledgeable sources (a.k.a. My Muslim Friends who actually remember a few things about their own religion), Mrs. Supangab like every other radical dweebs out there only took parts of the Holy Book and other Islamic Teachings that suit their twisted minds. My friends insist that Al Quran is indeed flaw-free, but it’s up to HUMAN BEINGS WITH THEIR OWN SOUND JUDGMENT ABOUT WHAT’S RIGHT OR WRONG to implement the material things in our daily lives. Therefore, in every cases where stupid-ass human beings do stupid stuff in the name of religion, I always and will always be blaming the stupid-ass human beings. And in Mrs. Supangab case, my opinion of Islam as a peaceful religion who teaches love has not changed. What I learned from her batshit blogs are: THE WOMAN SHOULD STOP TEACHING Y’ALL. SOMEBODY PLEASE DECERTIFY HER MERITS COZ THE WOMAN IS LEGIT CRAZY.  That, and that she should stop humiliating her people and her religion furthermore by displaying her crazy in the internet.

But hey, maybe one day Habib & Co. will amass enough funds to make their own TV station.
I think Mrs. Rachmi Supangab will be a fierce competitor to Mamah Dedeh, and will steal her radical (read: CRAZY) fanbase.

Spicy Potato Wedges
3 medium-sized potatoes, cut into wedges (about 6-8 wedges per potato)
Vegetable oil, to fry

Spice mix – mix throughly:
5 tablespoon of garlic powder –mine’s actually the cheap kind and I reckon it has more flour than garlic. If you’re using the high-quality garlic powder (McCormick’s, etc), use only 2 tablespoon of garlic powder and use 3 tblspn of flour instead
2 tablespoon of chili powder/smoked paprika
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 tablespoon of dried basil leaf/oregano/ any dried Italian herbs
1/2 teaspoon of freshly-cracked blackpepper

HOW

Bring a pot of water to boil. Put a generous amount of salt. Boil potato wedges for about 2-3 minutes, strain them, and pat them dry with a kitchen cloth or tissue. Let them cool. Heat some cooking oil for deep-frying. Deep fry the potato wedges just until some sort of “skin” formed on the potatoes (for about 2 minutes). Take out and strain, let them cool again. Put the spice-mix in a lidded container or a ziploc bag with the cool potatoes, give it a shake until the spice mix coats every single surfaces of the potatoes. Let sit for about 30 minutes or so. Deep fry again for 3-4 minutes. Serve hot as a side dish or snack.

OR if you’re feeling health-conscious and actually have a working oven T_T, you can bake them in the oven. Spread potato wedges in a shallow baking tray, and you can add grated parmesan on top to add more oomph. Yes, I said PARMESAN or other hard-cheeses (aged gouda or aged-edam would work well), therefore Kraft and its lot are out of the consideration. It will be icky. Bake them in a hot oven (180-200 Celcius) for 15 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown.

So last week when Shakira asked me if I wanted to order cupcakes together, I was like HECK YEA. She found this cute little cupcake webstore, Minilovebites from her friend. In their website they put up an impressive menu of cupcakes from the traditional to the more avant-garde selections. Their other plus point is that THEY DELIVER. You guys can also pick up your delivery if you like to torture yourselves with Jakarta’s traffic.

For our maiden delivery we ordered the traditional flavors: half dozen (100 K + 15 K delivery charge) of red velvet and double chocolate cupcakes.

When the box arrived I was restraining myself from jumping up and down. Pity about the yellow box though. I hate yellow. But I guess it’s cute for people who doesn’t abhor yellow.

Now down to the flavors.

They advertise their red velvet to have creamcheese frosting but it tasted more like buttercream to me. The cake itself was ok, not overly sweet and moist enough. Compared to the other red velvet I’ve eaten, I guess this one has a slight edge above the rest.

As for the double chocolate… Let me start with what they promised in their website; and I take this verbatim: “A bit goey”. Well it was dry. Boo. God killed a kitten, a unicorn just lost his horn, a rainbow just lost a band of color, vampires no longer sparkle, etc dsb dll. I call fraudulent advertising. And because of this I would probably suck up the traffic and go to Pacific Place instead if I have another craving for cupcake.

I freaking love this noodle. Obviously the naming of the size choices is a bit sexist (LARGE = “Porsi cowok–boys’ portion “; MEDIUM = “porsi cewek –girls’ portion”) but hey no1curr if your noodle is this good. I feel bad for boys who happen to have small appetite and  get stuck ordering the girly-portion out of embarrassment though, because the boys’ portion is HUGE.

My usual order is the Mie Cewek Special Pangsit – IDR 22 K: homemade noodle topped with four (!!!FOUR!!!) kinds of toppings (sweet and salty chicken mince, pork charsiu, and salty pork mince) and wontons. I think the crispy wonton bits are unnecessary, but I guess they watched too much MasterChef and wanted to add more ~~~texture to the dish. I’m telling you, I get the bad shakes when I go for weeks without eating it. They also made tasty “golden balls” (HA!) a.k.a. fried prawn & pork meatballs for IDR 3K each.

They open from early mornings to 3 PM only. Don’t be a noob like me who wake up at 2 PM on a weekend and got there at 4 PM. I still remember the heartbreak after hearing the dreaded words “Udah tutup Mbak.” If you don’t mind slightly mushy noodle, they also deliver.

My absolute fave is Kwetiauw Penang (with special order to make it extra hot) – around IDR 36 K after taxes.

Definitely worth coming back for.

Some other things that I’ve tried here just didn’t come to par. Their Mie Angsio Sapi with Wonton is just… pleh. It does look yummy here but the texture of the noodle is just too soft and I like noodles with a little elasticity and bite.  Their Ifumie was OK (a tad too much MSG tho), but the portion was way too big for one person but I finished it anyway. Sometimes to make me even fatter spice things up I ordered vegetables: Pocai Bawang Putih (IDR 21 K after taxes); or snacks: Lumpia Mayonnaise (IDR 21 K after taxes) which were also very tasty.

If you crave for something sweet then you’re in luck because the bakery is in the same spot. Their cakes are legen–wait for it–dary for its airy-like fluffiness. I love their matcha steam cake and tiramisu, but my #1 fave is their coconut cookies (IDR 20 K per pack). They’re seriously moreish and crunchy and thin. It’s like they put crack in it.

To sum it all, the food in the restaurant are good (although STAY AWAY FROM THE MIE ANGSIO SAPI) and a tad expensive. Their bakery however is top notch and the prices are reasonable. One thing I hate about the place is the PARKING. It’s a mess. The ruko is located just right next to Kelapa Nias – Boulevard intersection therefore be prepared to be cursed by oncoming traffic as you try to squeeze in/out of the tetris block of parked cars especially if you arrive/leave during busy hours.

X had a girlfriend up to about a week ago. Up to a week ago, I thought that X and his girlfriend were still an item, UNTIL…

I caught him with another girl, WHO IS ALSO MY COWORKER, this Saturday; walking in the mall with his arms around her; which tells me that prior to breaking up with his girlfriend, he already set up a “replacement” plan to fall on smoothly. Fucking spotted-dick bastard fuck.

Geezus Christo.

I may not get boys at all, but one thing I learned from X is that there is no “mourning” period from one girl to the next.
Even I who obviously is not attracted to him at all and definitely not his ex-girlfriend, feel so… violated and angry. If I were his ex I would be fucking pissed-off. I don’t know his ex and she might be an evil she-witch that made his life miserable, but wow I feel so sorry for her. Maybe this is girl-code sympathy or something. Couldn’t he at least pretend to be sad or mopey for a period of time before he gets his paws on another girl in public?

I swear, I can’t with all of this.

Finishing this book, I felt this reaction that I felt once before, from watching that goddamn 500 Days of Summer. So yeah, DAMN this book.

This book tells the story of Dexter and Emma from the day they graduated from uni to twenty years later. I split  the book into four ungodly parts:
1st part: The Part Where Emma Just Can’t Catch A Break and Dex Is Being a Dumb Fuck
2nd part: The Part Where Emma Settles for A Series of Consolation Prizes and Being Unhappy and Dex Is Being a Dumb Fuck, Part Deux
3rd part: The Part When I Hurled This Goddamn Book Accross The Room, Because GOD GURL WHY ARE YOU SO DUMB YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH JEAN-PIERRE
4nd part: The Part When I Can’t Anymore With Everything, also known as The Part Where I Cried Like A Bitch Baby

Anyway, quick semi-emotional recap:
After their one night stand after graduation, Emma and Dexter maintained a friendship that spanned over twenty years. Emma, after realising that her good grades did not translate into an easy life, began settling for a mediocre life, with jobs that she hated and the boyfriend that she did not love. Dexter came from an upper-class family and used to things coming at him easily. It’s as if he just stood there and success CAME at him. I had to read hundreds of pages of these two dumbfucks ruined their lives in different ways, one for not trying hard enough; and the other one for not knowing when enough is enough. At some halfway point in this book, I swear I shove it inside my bookbag and decided I had enough of reading about stupid people. One day (yesterday actually), I found this book again and mustered the strength to finish it because I’ve paid for it :p.

Then part 3 came and the tone of the book changed. These nitwits seemed to grow up a bit and realised that they had to clean up their acts and so they did. I was so happy for Emma (I may have a little transferance issue on this character) when she finally cut Dexter off (my favorite line in this book was “Dexter, I love you and maybe I always will but I think I just don’t like you anymore.” YOU GO GIRL) and really tried to become a writer instead of continuing her 6 years of dilly-dallying. From this point, the story became more seamless and not-so-dumb. Emma and Dex reconnected, but not before that stupid Dex dropped a bomb on her. I SWEAR IF ANYONE EVER DOES THIS TO ME, I WILL DIE. ON THE FREAKING SPOT. AT THAT EXACT MOMENT AFTER. Forget poison or guns, if anyone hates me enough to kill me, just get someone to do this and I’ll drop dead right away.

So after I cried legit tears reading about DA BOMB, I was kind of hoping that part four would consist of them growing up to their thirties living their separate lives being grown ups SEPARATELY. Yeah, then it kind of didn’t happen, because as it turned out Emma was so stupid. Maybe it’s because I personally believe that giving people second chances has its limits; and Emma unfortunately does not know how to set her limits. It’s not that I don’t believe that these two are in fact soulmates, it’s just that I couldn’t accept the fact that across the span of a decade after she met Dexter, Emma virtually waited for him. Sure there had been other guys, but I think she’d knew all along that no matter how messed up Dexter had been and how awful he’d been to her, she could never get rid of the hopes of  being with him until the end.

And of course, the ending happens. It happened so fast I had to reread it again to make sure that it really happened. I was dumbstruck and felt like I’ve just been slapped across my face with a wet fish. God damn the author of this book. I won’t go into details for those of you who are masochist enough to want to read this, but GOD.

So to summarize the whole experience of reading this book with one word: EXCRUCIATING. I think it’s not because the book itself was so awful, but because it narrates the lives of these two people without embellishment and unfortunately their lives were awful. Heck, I felt awful reading it because in reality, life itself is awful. Therefore, if your purpose of reading a book is to find escapism, yeah, stay away from this book. Go read The Hunger Games trilogy instead.

As awful as it made me feel, at least it provided me with pearls of wisdom:
1. DON’T WAIT
2. DON’T BE STUPID
